ANTHC101: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

Welcome to Introduction to Cultural Anthropology!

This course will focus on one of the core subfields in the discipline of ‘anthropology’—cultural anthropology. We will begin by studying how the study of ‘culture’ emerged historically, and explore the debates as to what exactly ‘culture’ means to anthropologists. This will open onto a broad survey of the different themes which cultural anthropologists have studied over the 20th and 21st centuries, and ultimately discuss the things we can do through this work.

How have anthropologists challenged dominant conceptualizations of ‘race’?

How can we use these methods to study class and inequality, gender and power?
